SANE Registered Nurse
We are looking for a compassionate and professional SANE Registered Nurse to join our team at a government facility in the North Mid-West. You will be responsible for providing care and support to patients who have experienced sexual assault, abuse, or incest, following the standardized process of examination, assessment, testing and treatment. You will also collect forensic evidence and may testify in court cases when necessary.
This is a long-term opportunity from 12 to 60 months, with full-time and on call shifts available. You will work in collaboration with other health care professionals, law enforcement officers, prosecutors, advocates, and counselors.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct comprehensive physical and psychological examinations of patients who have experienced sexual assault, abuse, or incest, using the appropriate equipment and protocols
- Collect and document forensic evidence, such as blood, urine, hair, clothing, and swabs, following the chain of custody procedures
- Provide medical treatment, such as prophylaxis for sexually transmitted infections, pregnancy prevention, and wound care, as indicated
- Offer emotional support, crisis intervention, and referrals to patients and their families, respecting their privacy, dignity, and autonomy
- Educate patients about their rights, options, and resources, and obtain informed consent for all procedures
- Maintain accurate and complete records of all patient encounters, interventions, and outcomes, using the electronic health record system
- Communicate and coordinate with other members of the multidisciplinary team, such as law enforcement officers, prosecutors, advocates, and counselors, as appropriate
- Provide expert testimony in court cases, as requested by the legal authorities
- Participate in ongoing education, training, and quality improvement activities, to maintain and enhance the standards of SANE practice
- Adhere to the ethical and legal principles of SANE nursing, as well as the policies and procedures of the government facility and the state
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited institution, with a master’s degree as a preference
- Current and valid license to practice as a registered nurse in any of the 50 U.S. states or territories
- Current and valid certification as a SANE-A® (adult and adolescent) and/or SANE-P® (pediatric) by the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN)
- At least two years of experience as a registered nurse in areas of practice that require advanced physical assessment skills, such as emergency, critical care, and maternal child health
- Completion of the SANE training program that meets the IAFN SANE Education Guidelines, including both classroom and clinical components
- Ability to perform forensic examinations, collect and document evidence, and provide expert testimony, following the best practices and guidelines of SANE nursing
- Ability to provide care and support to patients who have experienced sexual assault, abuse, or incest, with compassion, empathy, and respect
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team, in a fast-paced and challenging environment
- Ability to communicate effectively and professionally, both verbally and in writing, with patients, families, colleagues, and legal authorities
- Knowledge of the relevant laws, regulations, and resources related to sexual assault, abuse, and incest
- Proficiency in using the electronic health record system and other computer applications
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed
- Willingness to travel to different locations within the North Mid-West region, as needed
